Pianist, Titular Professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Head of the Chopin University’s Chair of Piano and String Chamber Music, founder and Artistic Director of the Piotr Janowski Foundation, recipient of the Decoration of Honour ‘Meritorious for the Capital City of Warsaw’.

Joanna Maklakiewicz graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw in the piano class of Prof. Alicja Paleta-Bugaj and the chamber music class of Prof. Krystyna Borucińska, as well as the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow in the piano class of Vladimir Bochkaryov. She also completed postgraduate studies in the interpretation of contemporary music under Prof. Szábolc Esztényi.

Joanna Maklakiewicz has given concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in many European countries as well as in Japan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. She has collaborated with singers: Olga Pasichnyk, Małgorzata Pańko, Anna Mikołajczyk, Junko Suga, Monika Świostek, Bogumiła Dziel-Wawrowska, Krzysztof Szumański; instrumentalists: Piotr Janowski, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Adam Korniszewski, Stefan Kamasa, Marek Bugajski, Magdalena Szczepanowska, Maria Pomianowska, Magdalene Berg, Katarina Chen, Adrian Selfjord, Andrzej Wróbel; conductors: Michał Klauza, Maciej Żółtowski, Conrad von Alphen, and many more.

She released the first ever album with piano works by Edward Wolff, W kręgu Wieniawskiego. Edward Wolff (In the Wieniawski’s Circle: Edward Wolff; Henryk Wieniawski Music Society in Poznań, Polish Radio 2, Piotr Janowski Foundation, 2014), and the album Saga Rodu. Pieśni braci Franciszka, Jana i Tadeusza Maklakiewiczów (The Saga of the Maklakiewicz Family. The Songs of Franciszek, Jan, and Tadeusz Maklakiewicz, 2020). She has also recorded many contemporary compositions, including world premieres Chof works by Joanna Bruzdowicz, Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska, Ewa Serafin (Norway) (CD From Near And Far, Chopin University Press, 2021), Mitsuru Asaka (Japan), Maciej Żóltowski and Aleksander Kościów. She recorded George Crumb’s Echoes of Time and the River with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra (Bridge Records, 2002).

She has recorded for Polish Radio, Norwegian Radio NRK, Russian Radio and Television, and conducted music courses in Poland, Norway, Lithuania, Ukraine, Estonia, and Switzerland. As part of the 2010 Chopin Year celebrations, she conducted the Annual International Workshop ‘Chopin for the Blind’ for visually impaired pianists from all over the world.

Joanna Maklakiewicz was a music consultant for Andrzej Żuławski’s staging of Stanisław Moniuszko’s opera The Haunted Manor at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw. She recorded music for Dariusz Pawelec’s film Drugi po Boy’u (The Second after Boy-Żeleński) about Polish writer and translator Maciej Słomczyński, as well as for Kinga Dębska’s Male radosti and Waldemar Dziki’s Salwarus.

She has been the Artistic Director of the Piotr Janowski Festival held every year in Grudziądz, Poland, as well as the ‘Paderewski. 3 x 100’ Festival organised with the Ateneum Theatre, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and the Museum of Interiors – National Museum in Warsaw (2018), and the ‘Crazy Star Villa’ Festival in the Żabiński Villa at the Warsaw Zoo (2018). She also acts as the protector of the artistic legacy of the Maklakiewicz Family and her late husband, the outstanding violinist Piotr Janowski, with whom she played concerts all over the world.
